Man takes scooty for test ride, flees

Berhampur: A youth was left in lurch after an unidentified man asked his two-wheeler for a test ride and fled with the vehicle.

According to sources, Niranjan Nayak of Nua Gouda Sahi in Ganjam district had brought his one-month-old Honda Dio scooty for servicing at Ankuli-based showroom.

He then parked his vehicle near the showroom and waited for his turn after taking a token. Meanwhile, an unidentified youth came to Nayak and asked his vehicle for a test ride.

Assuming, he was one of the service boys in the showroom, Nayak handed over the vehicle to the man who sped away. After waiting for four hours, Nayak suspected foul play and informed the showroom authorities who alleged that the person did not work there.

Later, Nayak approached Baidyanathpur police and lodged a written complaint in this connection. When contacted, the showroom in-charge Manoranjan Biswal said that the complaint was true and the showroom workers would help police in the probe.

The accused had extensive knowledge of motorcycles and seemed like a genuine worker in the showroom, Nayak told police. “He just came to me and inspected the bike after which he asked for the keys. Without doubts, I handed him over the keys. I came to know only after he did not return even after hours,” Nayak stated.

Police have proceeded to collect CCTV footage from the showroom and nearby areas.
