Rourkela: An elephant trampled a man to death at Lonkoi village near Biramitrapur in Sundargarh district Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Mahesh Lugun, 32.
According to reports, a herd of pachyderms roamed into Mahesh’s corn field.
When Mahesh was trying to drive away the elephants, one jumbo turned back and caught him with its trunk and trampled him to death.
Officials from Bisra police station and Biramitrapur forest department Tuesday morning reached the spot and efforts were on to drive away the herd.
Sources said there are 11 elephants in the herd while two of them strayed into the corn field.
Meanwhile, the villagers demanded compensation for the deceased’s family and expressed their dissatisfaction over the forest department’s failure to save valuable lives, crops and property from the attack of elephants.
