Manas emerges champion

Bhubaneswar, Dec 27: Manas Ranjan Jena of Bhubaneswar emerged champion of the State Open Chess Championships, which concluded at the Secretariat Recreation Club here Sunday.
Manas took the top honours with 8.5 points. Sujeet Kumar Nayak of Bhubaneswar finished runner-up with 7.5 points. Birakishore Behera of Puri also got the same points but had to be satisfied with the third place finish on the basis of tie-breaker.

Ravenshaw beaten
Ravenshaw suffered a humiliating eight wickets loss against Bhagalpur University in a quarterfinal match of the East Zone Inter-University cricket tournament at Darbhanga, Sunday. Opting to bat first, Ravenshaw suffered a batting debacle as they were skittled out for a paltry 68 runs in 31.5 overs. Bhagalpur had no problem in chasing as they knocked off the target in only 20 overs for the loss of two wickets.
BSNL triumph
BSNL defeated ELO XI by 61 runs in a match of the E League cricket tournament here Sunday. Put into bat first, BSNL rode on brilliant half centuries by BBCC Mohapatra (69) and Priyabrata Pradhan to score 254 for the loss of seven wickets in the stipulated 40 overs. In reply, ELO could manage only 193 for the loss of eight wickets in the allotted overs. BBCC (5/19) also bowled well to return with a five wicket haul.
KIIT, Utkal win
KIIT and Utkal Universities won their respective matches in the basketball event of the All India Inter-Zonal University Sports Meet here Sunday. KIIT triumphed over Bardhawan University 68-32, while Utkal defeated VBS Purvanchal University 87-73.
