New Delhi, April 3: State-run Coal India’s arm MCL has become the number one producer of the dry fuel in the country at 138 million tonne in fiscal 2016, contributing 39 per cent to the incremental growth of the coal behemoth.

“MCL, which celebrated Silver Jubilee Foundation Day Sunday, has crossed several milestones in coal mining sector during its journey that started in 1992 as a 23 million tonne coal producing company and youngest subsidiary of CIL,” Mahanadi Coalfield Ltd (MCL) said in a statement. Fiscal ended March 31, remained an eventful year for MCL as it became the flagship subsidiary of CIL, it added.

While MCL produced a record 137.9 million tonne (MT) coal at a growth of 13.6 per cent, it supplied 140.22 million tonne dry fuel to its consumers, registering a growth of 14 per cent compared to same period during previous fiscal. MCL Chairman and Managing Director AK Jha said the performance graph of the company will continue to show a northward trend. CIL accounts for over 80 per cent of the domestic coal production. MCL is the major subsidiary of Coal India and supplies fuel to most power producers in the eastern zone of the country.
