Medicos ragged at MKCG

Berhampur: Tension ran high at Berhampur-based Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati (MKCG) Medical College and Hospital here following allegations of ragging in the hostel here Sunday.
The matter came to light after a group of second year students accused their immediate seniors of ragging them on campus. Raising their voice against their college seniors, the victim students staged a sit-in outside the Dean’s office in the day.
Later, Dean Arun Kumar Dandapat discussed with students of both the groups and tried to resolve the matter amicably.

According to the victims, around 100 second year students who reside in the hostel were denied entry into the hostel by their seniors who allegedly ragged them. When they offered resistance, the seniors are stated to have shouted them down using filthy languages. Some seniors roughed them up, they alleged.
The junior students were allowed to enter the hostel after they agreed to have a head shave, they alleged. Some students, for fear of being harassed again, obeyed the seniors while others did not. The seniors then assaulted the adamant ones who refused to shave off their heads.

Angered by the torture, the victims Saturday approached the Dean but it was no use.
Left with no option, the students left the hostel before staging a dharna Sunday. They also threatened to resume their agitation until the authorities resolved the matter. Later, the Dean warned all the students and sent them back to the hostel. However, the junior students demanded a separate hostel. When contacted, the Dean said there was an anti-ragging squad in the college. ‘‘No such incidents will happen in future,’’ he said, assuring that he would look into the matter himself if ragging happens again.
