Meet the 10 year old terrace gardener from Bhadrak

Bhadrak: The Covid-19 pandemic has brought several activities to a grinding halt. But it has not been able to stop a ten-year-boy from hailing Kulana village under Bhanadaripokhari block in Bhadrak district from fulfilling his commitment to the environment by planting varities of trees on the roof of his house.

Son of Jitrendra Kumar Sahoo and Bimalini Sahoo, Omm Prakash Sahoo is a fifth grade student at Bhandaripokhari Sarada Vidya Mandir.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic schools across the state are closed till August 31.

When the friends of Omm are spending their times in watching TVs and cartoon shows on YouTube, he thought of doing something different and unusual.

After finishing his study, Omm had searched for how to do terrace gardening on YouTube. After seeing several videos he got a basic idea about the concept of terrace gardening.

Then in some small earthen pots he planted lady fingers, egg plants, cucumber, beans, and five types of chilies, bitter gourd, spinach, coriander and mint.

To give nourishment and natural care to the plants, the composition of his potting include  30 percent soil, 30 percent vermin-composting, 30 percent coco peat and 10 per cent neem cake.

Omm’s mother Bimalini said, Omm’s little kitchen has reduced the dependence on buying vegetables and greens by 50 per cent. “It has also reduced our expenses on vegetables”, added Bimalini.

After the spread of the news former BJP District President reached at Omm’s house and appreciated him for his unique and innovative efforts.
