Puri: The State endowment commission has initiated a move to look into the state of mutts in the Holy City here.
Endowment commissioner Biraja Prasad Datta recently visited altogether eight mutts in the Holy City here and collected information on their financial position, among other issues. Datta also took stock of the affairs at Gopalatirtha mutt, Sanachhata mutt, Nandini mutt, Badasantha mutt, Uttarparshaw mutt, Shankaranand mutt, Badaakhada mutt and Jeeyer Swami mutt and held discussions with the pontiffs of these mutts.
“Many mutts in the Pilgrim City are going through financial crisis due to absence of income sources. Authorities of these mutts are facing problems to pay salaries to their priests and employees. We will soon convene a meeting of all pontiffs to find out ways for reviving the mutt culture in Puri,” Datta said.
Sources said, some pontiffs have informed Datta regarding the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration’s move to take control of the Bauli mutt in the city. The endowment commissioner has assured the pontiffs to take up the issue with the Law department.
“The SJTA had taken control of the Bauli mutt without informing the issue to the endowment commission. We will thoroughly examine the issue,” Datta told news persons after meeting the pontiffs.
Recently, the SJTA had assumed administrative control of the Bauli mutt. Sources said, the temple administration is mulling to take control of another four mutts.
