Bhubaneswar, Jan 17: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started on-street parking between Master Canteen and Rajmahal Square on a pilot project basis.
A private contractor has deployed a few boys clad in blue uniform displaying the BMC logo to manage the parking lot in front of Khadims showroom at Janpath. A board displaying the rates and the helpline number has also been put up on the pavement.
The new parking system has been implemented alongside Janpath. The parking lot in the opposite direction is yet to be manned by a contractor.
The move has apparently started yielding results as two-wheeler riders are now not allowed to park on the road and instead are being asked to park the vehicles near the pavement to help streamline traffic.
The rate for parking cars for four hours is Rs 10. The rate for two-wheelers is Rs 2 and for bicycles Re 1.
“This is just a pilot project so that cars, bikes, scooters and auto-rickshaws can be parked in a systematic manner. If it proves successful, it would be expanded to other busy stretches,” said a senior BMC official.
