Mentally challenged person faces police torture

The auto rickshaw carrying the mentally challenged man

Nayagarh: In a heart rending scene, Sarankul police were seen kicking and dragging a mentally challenged person, with his mouth taped and limbs tied, to the police station. The action drew flaks from different quarters of the society.

Even as the incident occurred Tuesday, town dwellers were critical of the police even Wednesday.

Sources said a mentally challenged person of Biligorada village under Sarankul police limits in Nayagarh district beat up his father before biting him Tuesday. On being informed, three constables of Sarankul police station reached the village. Instead of bringing the mentally challenged person in their police van, they brought him in an auto rickshaw.

According to eye witnesses, one constable was seen sitting on his legs, second one on his back and the third one was seen sitting on his head while taking him to the police station in the auto rickshaw.

Though the person cried for mercy, it fell on the cops’ deaf ears. For the entire stretch of around 10 km from Biligorada to Sarankul police station, he was made to undergo all these tortures. The constables seemed to have lost all humanity.

Hundreds of people in the market witnessed the torture being inflicted on a mentally challenged person. Though they wanted to object such cruelty, they dared not, fearing police action.

When asked, Sarankul IIC Manoj Kumar Satpathy admitted to the cops bringing the person with his limbs tied, saying as the person was a mentally disabled one, they had no other option.  And regarding the man being brought in an auto rickshaw, he said, “As the police van was engaged in taking an accused to the court, the constables had to bring him in an auto rickshaw.”
