Jalpaiguri, WB: A mentally challenged woman was assaulted by a mob in Jalpaiguri district of North Bengal on suspicion of being child-lifter, police said Tuesday.
The woman sustained critical injuries in the attack and had to be admitted to a hospital. The incident was reported from Barogharia Gram Panchayat area in Dhupguri block.
Meanwhile, locals claimed that the woman was spotted in the neighbourhood a few times over the past few days. She carried candies and lured children.
“There have been incidents of child trafficking here, so we suspected her to be member of a child-lifting gang as she was carrying several candies,” a local said adding that their suspicion increased after she failed to reveal her identity and show any proof.
However, doctors in the hospital and police said that the woman was mentally challenged and was left after treatment.
“We are investigating the incident,” Jalpaiguri Superintendent of Police (SP) Amitava Maity said.
