Mentally-deranged woman gangraped in rehabilitation center

Bhubaneswar: In a shocking incident, a mentally-deranged woman was allegedly gang-raped by the proprietor and employees of a rehabilitation center in the capital where she was undergoing treatment for some ailment.

The matter came to the fore after the victim lodged a complaint with the Commissionerate police with the help of her brother.

The man who ran the center, Jayanta Panda has been arrested. The police sent both the accused and the victim for medical examination.

According to sources, the 36-year-old woman from Jagatsinghpur area, mother of two, was put in the rehabilitation centre by her family members after she was experiencing some mental illness.

Family members were in touch with Panda and paid him a monthly treatment and stay fee of Rs 10,000.

As per the complaint, Panda had started sexually exploiting her in recent months. Some other employees of the firm got to know about this. They first threatened to make the matter public and then started sexually exploiting her on a regular basis.

Failing to bear the sexual torture anymore, the woman managed to escape from the rehabilitation centre and got back to her home in May. Panda managed to convince her family members that her treatment at the centre should continue, and brought her back with him.

Things turned worse after that. The woman, allegedly, was repeatedly raped by Jayant and his employees. Unable to take it anymore, the woman again fled the centre and informed her family about the trouble she was facing there.

The woman was so traumatized that she was not agreeing to come to Bhubaneswar even to report the matter to the police. Her brother, however, convinced her and they met DCP Arun Sahoo Friday and lodged a complaint.

The arrest followed. A probe has been started and the other accused will be arrested soon, police said.
