Nuapada: A man from Odisha, who was a labourer in Chennai, met with an accident while travelling in a train on his way back home. Both his legs have been amputated following the accident.
Shreekant Hans (33) is a resident of Babebira panchayat’s Khairabhadi village near Boden in Nuapada district.
Shreekant was working at a brick kiln for the last three months in Chennai. He went there through a local labourers’ leader.
When he was returning to Odisha four days ago, he met with an accident in the train.
In the crowded train, he was standing near the door of the compartment. A little jostle threw him on the tracks and both his legs came under the wheels.
His two colleagues Makardhwaj Hans and Kapil Hans rescued and admitted him at a local government hospital near the accident spot.
After giving him first aid, his colleagues brought him to the village Sunday.
The family members and local residents were shocked to see the condition of Shreekant, who is the sole breadwinner of his family.
The poor family members are clueless about how to meet the medical expenses of Shreekant.
Villagers urged the labour department to extend possible assistance to Shreekant and his family.
They also alleged that the administration failed to provide work to the unemployed village youths, forcing them to look for jobs outside the state.
They said the administration failed to keep track on the number of youths who went out of the state for livelihood and what is their condition.
With many of the workers leaving the village in an unorganised fashion, it must become difficult for the authorities to track the movement of labourers, some locals pointed out.
