Ministry show-cause notice for West Bengal Trinamool MP’s wife

Trinamool Congress MP, Abhishek Banerjee

New Delhi: The Union Home Ministry has issued a show-cause notice to Rujira Naroola, wife of Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, for allegedly forging documents to avail Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) and PAN cards, a Ministry official said Wednesday. She is accused of submitting the false documents to ‘conceal facts’.

The Ministry, in its notice, has asked Naroola to provide a detailed written explanation for hiding facts in her application to obtain these documents. Naroola’s husband is the nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and is second in command of the party.

The notice was issued days after the Central government informed the Supreme Court that the West Bengal Police ‘intimidated’ customs officials at the Kolkata International Airport, March 16 when they caught Naroola of carrying excess gold without a declaration.

Customs officials have filed a complaint against Naroola, who has, in turn, filed a counter complaint. However, her husband has said that the allegations are ‘false’ and intended to malign the image of his wife and party.

It should also be mentioned here that the BJP has complained to the EC alleging that Naroola was carrying 2kg of undisclosed gold and the police had intervened when the customs officials had intercepted her
