Baliguda: A three-member team led by Baliguda SDPO Nitin Kushalkar Monday detained a minor boy on charges of raping a one and a half year old baby girl here in Kandhamal district December 10.
Acting on a tip-off, the team detained the boy from Barakhama under Baliguda police limits and produced him before a juvenile court after medical examination.
Compensation of Rs 5 lakh was provided by the police department to the victim’s family, SDPO Kushalkar told reporters at his office. The minor allegedly raped the baby while she was asleep. Family members spotted her crying and bleeding from her private parts and rushed her to Baliguda sub-divisional hospital. The baby was then shifted to Phulbani district headquarters hospital as her condition worsened.
Earlier, the BJP had threatened to gherao SDPO’s office demanding arrest of the accused at the earliest. The villagers staged a road blockade in this connection December 14.
After preliminary investigations, police came to know that the boy had committed the crime. They picked him from Barakhama area before he confessed to the crime, the SDPO said.
