Miscreant killed in encounter with cops

Berhampur: A miscreant was killed and another injured in two separate encounters with the police in Ganjam district Tuesday, police said.

Babu Nayak (25), allegedly involved in over 40 cases including a major bank dacoity, was injured after an exchange of fire with a police team near Kadua, said sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Bhanjanagar, Utkala Keshari Das.

Nayak, who received injury, was arrested and taken to a hospital where doctors declared him dead, the police said.

Two country-made pistols, some live ammunition and a motorcycle were seized from the site of encounter and one of his associates was also arrested, Das said.

Police said Nayak, who had been arrested August 3 last year at Janibandh under Tarsingi police station limits, had escaped while undergoing treatment in MKCG Medical College and Hospital here November 25, this year.

In the other encounter, a member of an inter-district dacoit gang was arrested by the police after an exchange of fire early Tuesday, a senior police officer said.

The gangster, Ananta Kumar Machhua (23) of Ranapur in Nayagarh district, was arrested after an exchange of fire with the police at Gudi Dhepa village, Superintendent of Police, Brijesh Kumar Rai said.

One pistol, live ammunition, a motorcycle and Rs 1,500 in cash were seized from him, the SP said, adding that Machhua was admitted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital here.

He was involved in at least 10 cases of dacoity in Ganjam, Khurda and Nayagarh districts, the police said.

A truck-loaded with 950 cartons of rum from a manufacturing unit at Gopalpur was going towards Nirgundi in Cuttack, when a gang looted the liquor-laden truck December 4.

After the arrest of Machhua, seven other members of the gang were also arrested by the police.

The police seized three vehicles, including the stolen truck, and recovered 450 cartons of rum and 10 mobile phones from the accused persons, the SP said.
