Berhampur: Visually-impaired students of a blind school here were taught how to use smart phones. This was part of a move to empower them by teaching them the use of modern gadgets at the school premises here Saturday.
The move has drawn wide appreciation as the country prepares to celebrate World Disability Day Sunday. The matter came to light during a training programme for the visually impaired students organised on the Milton Blind School premises in Ashok Nagar.
Several visually-impaired students participated in the programme where resource persons Madhav Kumar Bisoyi and Ranjan Kumar Biswal taught students on the use of Android-based mobile phones.
They claimed that the android phones have various features but the students were unaware of its use due to lack of vision.
The resource persons said the visually-impaired students could easily use the smartphones by activating the talk back option by first going into settings options.
As the use of smartphones has become a necessity today, the training on the use of smartphones will go a long way in helping visually-impaired students to keep a tab on everyday development, a report said.
The training programme was inaugurated by district social welfare officer Balaram Sethy and BMC corporator Surendra Moharana of ward-31.
Vice-president Sarada Prasanna Rout, general secretary Siddharth Shankar Rout, executive secretary Susant Sahoo, Dr Pradosh Kumar Swain, Harish Chandra Rath and Sisir Kumar Mohapatra conducted the programme. PNN
