Barang: In an appalling incident, a royal Bengal tiger mauled two monkeys — an infant and an adult — to death at the Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) here Sunday.
The incident occurred in the afternoon when a baby monkey fell off a tree and landed inside enclosure-31B, where the tiger Manish, born to Rohit and Sailaja February 28, 2008, has been sheltered. In an attempt to cover the infant, an adult monkey also landed into the enclosure. However, it did precarious little as Manish mauled the duo to death within 10-minutes.
On being informed, NZP authorities rushed to the spot and recovered the duo carcasses.
This apart, Sambhu, a Himalayan bear at enclosure-16 here, has been struggling with a swelling on its front right leg.
A team of experts inspected the bear’s health Sunday. “As of now, we have prescribed antibiotics for the bear for a fortnight. In case the condition persists, the bear may be subjected to surgery,” said one of the experts.
Born in 1988 at NZP, Sambhu has been instrumental for the increase in the Himalayan bear family at the zoo.
