Bhubaneswar, June 17: The southwest monsoon finally hit Orissa Friday, the India Metrological Department (IMD) said.
“The southwest monsoon has set in over some parts of Orissa Friday. It has covered the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur and Puri, as well as some portions of the adjoining districts of Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati,” a bulletin issued by IMD said.
If conditions are favourable, the monsoon will cover the remaining south-western districts in two or three days, according to the bulletin.
The state has been experiencing rain for the last two to three days but rainfall was less in the nearby states of Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, said Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre director Sarat Chandra Sahu. This was not favourable for the advancement of the monsoon, he said.
“However, Friday, the monsoon has covered most parts of the Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur and Puri,” Sahu said.
The maximum rainfall of 24.6 mm was recorded at Jharsuguda from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm Friday, followed by 16 mm at Puri, 10 mm at Daringbadi, 1.8 mm at Cuttack and 1 mm at Chandbali.
A trough line has been formed at the surface extending from Rajasthan to the northwestern Bay of Bengal passing through Orissa. Under the influence of the system, most places in the state are likely to experience rain in the next 24 hours, according to Sahu.
One or two places in northern and coastal Orissa are likely to experience heavy rain. The Met advised fishermen not to venture into the sea.
The temperature has decreased in all parts of the state excluding Bolangir, which recorded 40 degrees Celsius.
