Bhubaneswar, June 7: A depression over the Arabian Sea has hampered the advance of the southwest monsoon to the state, with the Meteorological Centre here saying that the monsoon may hit Orissa around June 14.
The southwest monsoon, which was over the northeastern region of the country Saturday, has not advanced Sunday, according to the meteorological department.
“The southwest monsoon has not advanced and has remained over the northeastern region,” said Met director Sarat Sahu.
“The depression over the Arabian Sea could hamper the pace and course of the monsoon to state and we can expect it to come to the state around June 14,” said the Met director.
The current weather condition is not favourable for the monsoon to make its onset over the state with the weatherman further warning of a rise in temperature in many pockets of the state over the next two days.
“The current depression over the Arabian Sea is blocking the path of the monsoon and is also likely to lead to a rise in temperature over the next 48 hours. The mercury level in some parts of the state may touch a high of 42° Celsius during the period,” said Sahu.
The Met center has warned of strong and gusty surface winds over the coastal belt with speeds of up to 45 kmph in the next 24 hours, despite the disappointing rainfall over the past few days. The sea condition will remain moderate to rough, the Met centre warned.
A few places of the state received rainfall in the past 24 hours with the highest rainfall of 43mm being recorded at Dhenkanal, followed by 25.4mm in Keonjhar and 13mm in Daringbadi. The Met office has also predicted light to moderate rain over a few places in the state in the next 24 hours.
