Kendrapara: A woman from Righagada village Wednesday night reportedly sold her newborn for Rs 12,000 due to poverty and it being a girl.
The district administration has no information on this incident so far.
According to sources, Gitanjali Moharana, wife of Nirakar Moharana, delivered a girl at a private clinic near the district head quarters hospital. The woman, who had two girl children already, and her husband decided to sell their newborn because they don’t want another girl child.
Though the local Asha worker Annapurna Moharana, who was present at the hospital, said such an act was against the law. But Gitanjali reportedly told her that she doesn’t want another girl child as she already had two girls.
Annapurna said: “Gitanjali communicated with a broker and later decided to sell the newborn for Rs 12,000. A local from Kendrapara bought the baby.”
When contacted district collector Reghu G said the matter has not yet come to his notice. The collector said he would conduct an inquiry on the incident. PNN
