Boinda: In a 30-year-old dowry harassment and murder case in the Athmallik NAC area of Angul district, a local court handed down life imprisonment to a man and his mother, sources said.
The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Ranjan Kumar Sutar at Athmallik Friday pronounced the verdict in the case.
The court convicted the husband of the victim, Mahadevlal Goduka, and the mother-in-law, Devakibai Goduka, sentencing them to life imprisonment.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each, apart from the punishment.
In case of a default of payment, they will have to undergo an additional two years in prison. Victim’s sister-in-law, Saroja Devi, and brother-in-law, Binayak Goduka, were acquitted due to lack of evidence.
According to the prosecution, the victim Sarita Agrawal, elder daughter of Nathu Ram Agrawal of the FCI area in Angul, was married to Mahadevlal Goduka, elder son of Nathulal Goduka of Ratha Sahi in Athamallik, March 5, 1994.
Sarita was allegedly subjected to dowry harassment and murdered January 5, 1996.
Her father had lodged a complaint at Athamallik police station in this connection.
Based on the complaint, police arrested her father-in-law Nathulal Goduka; husband, Mahadevlal Goduka, mother-in-law Devakibai Goduka; and brotherin-law Binayak Goduka.
