A “Jack of all trades, master of none” is somebody who by the sheer effort to learn too many things end up learning nothing. But Jaya Biswas doesn’t believe in this saying. In an exclusive chat with Orissa POST, she says how she effortlessly manages to don so many hats.
Jaya’s real name is Jayanti Biswas but after joining the media industry she became popular as Jaya Biswas. She completed her schooling from Kendriya Vidyalaya I in Bhubaneswar. During her schooldays she was much into sports and painting and had won many awards at the national level meets. But from childhood she was determined to become an actress and used to imitate popular dialogues in front of the mirror. After Class X she entered the dancing field as a professional and she believes an actor should be a good dancer too. Dance is her passion; she eats dance, lives dance, sleeps dance; it won’t be wrong to say that dance is everything to her.
Jaya has tasted success in popular dance reality shows like Dance India Dance (DID), India’s Dancing Superstar, and Boogie Woogie, telecast in different national TV channels. She also won the Maggie Dhoom Machale dance show aired on Tarang TV. Presently, she is a professional dancer and choreographer.

“As far as dance goes the most important thing is expressions and my mother always guided me in acting and dancing; so for me she is the real guru. I have done a lot of hard work and have gone through a lot of struggle. In 2005-2006 when I first stepped into the entertainment world nobody looked at me and no one in my family belonged to the entertainment industry. I was a fresher and people were reluctant to give me offers,”
she says.
She is also an expert RJ as evidenced in ‘Chup Chap Rati Tup Tap Katha’ in 104 FM which was a very popular show and made Jaya a household name. She morphed into a VJ with the show ‘Nijhum Ratira Sathi’ and ‘Voice of Orissa’ on Taranga TV. Nijhum Ratira Sathi was the turning point in her life and her family, Jaya says, has always been by side.
And, what’s more, Jaya also designs her own costume. “Each and every costume you see me onscreen are designed by me. I love to keep myself busy,” she adds.
When asked how she manages to spend time with her family given her hectic schedule she says, “We have a small family which includes my papa, mom and younger brother. I try to spend as much time with my family as possible. My parents are like my friends and I am eternally thankful to them for their unflinching support and cooperation,” she quips.
And what would Jaya want to be remembered as? “As a creative director and a good actress,” pat comes the reply.
