‘Murder accused’ trader shot dead

Kamakhyanagar: Unidentified miscreants shot dead a businessman accused in the murder case of a samiti member here in Dhenkanal district allegedly over past enmity, police said Thursday. The victim was identified as Nirakar Sahu alias Nira, a trader of minor minerals and a native of Kantioputasahi under Tumusinga police limits in the district.

Reports said Sahu was the prime accused in the murder case of a panchayat samiti member Deepak Mahunta of Baruan (A) panchayat. As per sources, Mahunta was allegedly shot dead by Nirakar and his associates, September 24, 2021. Police had then registered a case and arrested Nirakar on the charge. Later, he was released on bail four months back. Nirakar’s bullet-ridden body was found lying in a mango orchard near Malabandha railway bridge in Alatuma village under Kamakhyanagar police limits, Thursday.

Police have registered a case over a complaint filed by his wife Janaki Sahu and launched an investigation. His brother Sarbeshwar Sahu also alleged that his brother had been killed in a planned manner over past enmity. Police after preliminary inquiries said that three bullets pierced his chest and head and there are severe injury marks on his neck. People rushed to the crime spot after reports of the incident spread sending shockwaves in the area. Dhenkanal SP Gyanaranjan Mohapatra, ASP Suryamani Pradhan, Kamakhyanagar SDPO Prabhat Kumar Tripathy, Kamakhyanagar police station IIC Sarat Chandra Mahallick rushed to the spot and took stock of the crime scene. A scientific team and a dog squad were also pressed into service. When contacted, Dhenkanal SP Gyanaranjan Mohapatra said it is suspected to be a planned murder. Multiple teams have been formed to nab the accused persons, he said expressing hope that very soon the accused will be arrested and put behind bars.
