Bhubaneswar, Jan 20: Two persons including a woman were found dead and another woman was found injured at Nilakantha slum here Wednesday.
The police identified the man as Braja Mohan Hansda alias Kana of Udala, Mayurbhanj district. The deceased woman is yet to be identified.
The police said the injured woman stays in the locality. Sources said she is mentally unstable and might have barged into the shanti of the couple.
“We learnt about the murder this morning. We visited the spot and found the legs and hands of the victims were battered. Braja was also hit on his chest. However, we did not find serious injuries on their heads,” Chandrasekharpur police inspector-in-charge Devi Shankar Prasad told Orissa POST.
“The woman has been residing in the house of Gopal Bishra of Mayurbhanj for the past 20 days. She was in a relationship with Gopal, who in the past had separated from two wives. Braja, who works as a BMC labourer, used to visit their house. According to preliminary investigations, the murder seems to have been a case of personal dispute,” Pratap said.
“The house of Gopal, a tractor mechanic, is adjacent to his father Bhima Bhishra’s house. While Bhima and his younger son Renta stay in one house, Gopal stays in another. We have detained Bhima and Renta in this connection,” he added.
“We saw Gopal January 19 morning, but what happened in the night we can’t say as we close our doors before sleeping,” a woman residing in Gopal’s neighbourhood said.
“We don’t interact with them as we can’t understand their language properly,” the woman added.
“Gopal and his family members consume handiya (rice beer). We avoid talking to them as they create ruckus in an inebriated state,” Budhia Murmu, a resident of the locality said.
“Gopal was not staying here. He came back two months back. The deceased woman then came here and started leaving with him,” he added.
Police commissioner Rajendra Prasad Sharma and a forensic team visited the spot to probe the gruesome murder.
Talking about the incident, DCP Satyabrata Bhoi told this newspaper they suspect the role of Gopal behind the murder.
“The trio possibly got into an argument over a personal dispute on the intervening night of January 19/20. Gopal might have killed the duo, it is suspected,” Bhoi said.
Bhoi also did not rule out the involvement of more than one person in the murder. Meanwhile, the bodies have been sent to Capital Hospital for an autopsy.
