BHUBANESWAR: There are various ways of doing business — and there’s an Indian way of doing business. If you are guessing that this is referred to jugaad technology — our native way of innovation — then you are up for a surprise.
Enumerated in detail in his book Business Sutra, renowned author and management guru Devdutt Pattanaik has described the contours of Indian management principles that can be applied to domestic business firms. The ace author and orator has focused on the application of business lessons from Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharata on day-to- day functioning of a corporation.
Pattanaik, born of Oriya parents and had his upbringing and Mumbai where he is currently based, has by now a global following. He will be the Chief Speaker at the Nandini Satpathy Birth Anniversary Celebration at Soochana Bhavan Tuesday, June 9.
Eminent author, speaker, illustrator and mythologist, Pattanaik easily fits into the mould of a management guru. A physician-turned leadership consultant, his books focus largely in the areas of myth, mythology and management aspects. His articles appear in publications like Economic Times (Corporate Dossier supplement), Mid-Day, Speaking Tree and the DailyO (India Today website), and they deal mainly with leadership issues faced by modern corporations.
A TV personality of repute, he takes a close look at the myths of India and of the West — and explains in a lucid style how these two fundamentally different sets of beliefs about God, death and heaven “help us consistently misunderstand one another.”
The mythologist has featured in a special series called “Business Sutra” on CNBC TV and CNBC Awaaz. He had served as the Chief Belief Officer of Future Group, and is now a top culture consultant for multinationals and Indian corporations. While the role of corporate governance rises in the functioning of business houses with elements of ‘value and ethics’ being the key driver for future growth, ideas of Devdutt Pattanaik are considered more relevant for modern business establishments.
