Nabarangpur: The Government Model Degree College in Nabarangpur was closed sine die Saturday amid tension following the cancellation of the students’ union elections for the 2026-27 academic year.
Citing fears of possible unrest and law and order issues, the college authorities suspended all academic activities until further orders. In a notice issued Saturday, the college authorities suspended classes, examinations and all other academic activities until further orders.
Hostel residents were directed to vacate their rooms within four hours of the notice, by 5pm. Entry to the college campus has also been restricted without prior written permission from the authorities.
The notice stated that the decision was taken to ensure the safety of students and staff and protect college property amid the possibility of unrest following the cancellation of the elections.
The election was cancelled on the grounds that there were insufficient eligible candidates to contest the various posts. However, students have questioned the decision, alleging irregularities in the nomination process.
