Nagaland edge out Orissa

Bhubaneswar, Feb 19: Nagaland scraped past Orissa 2-1 in the quarterfinal of the AITA Inter-State Men’s tennis tournament at Bhilai, Friday.

Ansu Kumar Bhuyan defeated Keneisezotuo Whourie in direct sets 6-4, 6-2. However, in the second singles Chinmay Pradhan lost to Vilasier Khate 3-6, 2-6. The duo of Chinmay and Ansu was then defeated in the doubles by Vilasier and Sezoutuo Whourie 4-6, 2-6.

Four from Orissa

Four players from Orissa were selected Friday in the India women’s team for the Asia Rugby Development 7s Tournament to be played at the Nehru Stadium, Chennai, February 20-21. They are Bhagyalaxmi Barik, Sanjukta Munda, Hupi Majhi and Meerarani Hembram. Manas Kumar Jena of the state has also been selected as the assistant coach and manager of both the men’s and the women’s teams.

Five selected

AIFF selected five footballers from Orissa, Friday for the U-14 girls’ national preparatory camp of AFC U-14 Girls’ Regional Football Championship at Gandhi Nagar, March 7-April 20. They are Namita Panna, Susmita Tanty, Banya Kabiraj, Niketa Bishi and Deepa Nayak. Meanwhile Sradhanjali Samanray has been appointed as the coach of the India U-14 football team.

Umpire appointed

Nishan Jyoti Mohanty of Orissa has been appointed as the umpire for the 64th All India Police Hockey Championship at Guwahati, February 22-29.
