National handloom honours for two Odisha weavers

Bhubaneswar: Two master weavers from Odisha have brought laurels to the state by receiving prestigious national honours from President Droupadi Murmu on the occasion of National Handloom Day, Friday.

Ram Meher of Bargarh was conferred the ‘Sant Kabir Award-2025’, while Prafulla Kumar Sahoo of Jagatsinghpur received the ‘National Handloom Award-2025’ in recognition of their outstanding craftsmanship and contribution to India’s traditional handlooms.

Congratulating the awardees, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said the honours reflect the rich legacy of the state’s handloom and the dedication of its weavers. Their exceptional creativity, skill and lifelong commitment have earned Odisha national recognition and strengthened its reputation as a hub of traditional art and craft.

The CM described the achievement as a matter of immense pride for the entire state, noting that the artisans have played a significant role in preserving and promoting Odisha’s cultural heritage.
