Bhubaneswar, Jan 20: Advising students to upkeep the nation’s secular credentials, Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal supremo Naveen Patnaik Tuesday said they should raise voice against gender discrimination and other injustices.
‘‘We have progressive policies for youths and women. I urge upon you (students) to raise voice against gender related violence as gender equality is most important for the development of state and the nation,’’ Patnaik said addressing a rally organised by BJD’s student wing.
Stating that his government is committed to the education of students and youths he said, “IIT, IIIT, NISER, Central University, AIIMS, IIM and many institutions and varsities were set up in the past decade for the growth of the youngsters in terms of providing higher education.”
Asserting that India has a vast youth population BJD is committed to their progress, the Chief Minister said, “We have progressive policies for youths and women. The policy envisages scope for the youths to make progress in the next five years. It will help in their (students and youths) greater participation in state affairs.”
Patnaik, who was accorded a rousing reception at the gathering, asked the students to draw inspiration from the life of Biju Patnaik who never feared anybody while fighting against injustice.
Citing the supreme sacrifices made by Orissa’s boy martyr Baji Rout and sculptor Dharama, Patnaik said young persons can do everything if they are determined.
‘‘However, you (students) need to expand your knowledge base and become technology savy,’’ he said.
In his New Year message to the students, Patnaik gave three mantras. ‘‘Your priority should be career, respect to your parents and your role in the society and nation building,’’ Patnaik said.
Though Patnaik did not name any political party, his focus was on BJP. ‘‘It is the young people like you who become the torch-bearers of change. Therefore, you can decide where India will stand tomorrow,’’ he said.
Others who addressed the rally included Food and supplies minister Sanjay Das Burma and BJD students wing president Byamakesh Ray.
