Bhubaneswar, March 30: Family is the smallest democracy, the micro block that provides the base for a noble society and a country at large for which Home Science education plays a crucial role.
This was revealed at a two-day national seminar on ‘Empowering Families and Communities through Home Science Education’ at Rama Devi Women’s Autonomous College here Monday.
The need to empower families and communities has become crucial for nation-building.
“Rapidly growing countries like India need strong policies to be implemented at the grassroots level for which the home makers and the home science education could play a vital role. However, there is no need for the subject to be gender specific,” said Utkal Univeristiy vice chancellor Asok Das, who was the chief guest of the seminar.
An ill-managed family leads to an ill-maintained society. Home Science has become an integral part of today’s world where women can learn not only about managing their homes, but also about the outside world and become an entrepreneur.
“A woman has a perception that Home Science is all about home making but the subject has a vast potential that can teach a woman issues ranging from home making to health. It is commonly believed that the subject lack employment potential. However, a pursuant of Home Science can become a nutritional specialist, consultant, microbiologist and so on,” said Aruna Palta, principal of Dr Radhabhai Government Navin Girls College, Raipur in Chhattisgarh.
Experts said many programmes including cleanliness drives and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) could not be achieved without involvement of women and home scientists.
The seminar, jointly organised by Home Science department of RD Women’s College and City Women’s College, was attended by the principal of City Women’s College Swapna Patnaik, principal of RD Women’s College Chitrangada Samantsinghar and HoD, Home Science department, Rita Chowdhary among others.
