Baripada: A new species of scorpion has been discovered in the biodiversity-rich Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) in Mayurbhanj district, marking the first recorded presence of the Liocheles genus in Odisha.
Named ‘Liocheles Similipalensis ’, the species was discovered through a joint initiative by researchers from Thackery Wildlife Foundation (TWF) and STR officials. The scorpion measures approximately 44 mm to 53mm in length and has a glossy black body with a bluish sheen. It is generally found in rocky habitats.
Specimens of the newly identified species were collected from the moist deciduous forests of Similipal at an altitude of about 1,000 metre above sea level. Researchers Saurabh Khinge, Tejas Thackeray and Akshay Khandekar, along with STR Field Director Prakash Chandra Gogineni, conducted the study and prepared the scientific description establishing the species’ identity.
The discovery adds to Similipal’s rich biodiversity and highlights the ecological significance of the protected forest landscape. Researchers identify the scorpion as belonging to the Liocheles genus after examining tiny hair-like structures beneath a section of its legs and the anatomical features of various body parts.
The specimen was initially collected by forest officials of the sanctuary and later sent to Akshay Khandekar, a scientist at TWF, for detailed examination. Six species of the Liocheles genus were previously known.
With this discovery, the number has increased to seven. The newly identified species has been named after Similipal, where it has so far been found exclusively.
