New Delhi: The Eastern Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has asked the state government to ensure sufficient funds for establishment of a solid waste management plant in Angul municipality area.
The order came after a petition was filed by Amit Pattanaik, a resident of Angul, over the issue of rampant disposal of garbage on the streets of the area and blatant violation of prescribed laws by the local municipal body with regard to solid waste management.
“The complainant told the court that there was illegal, indiscriminate and unscientific dumping as well as mismanagement of municipal solid waste by the Angul Municipality in complete disregard to the Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000,” Advocate Sankar Prasad Pani representing the case at NGT told Orissa POST.
According to the case details, the only dumping yard of the municipality located near Angul was Kushasingha which was not secured by construction of boundary wall although the work was awarded to various contractors owing mainly to the resistance by the locals.
Due to the delay in completion of the dumping yard, the municipality was accused of disposing of the municipal waste in the middle of the town close to the residential colony and the bus stand causing serious health hazards to the inhabitants. Moreover the pollution menace in Angul is also reported to be bad owing to several alumunium and other industries, which was only aggravating the problem.
Moved by the genuiness of the complaint, the NGT while disposing off the case has asked the local municipal body to start the process of having a solid waste treatment plant, asked the state government to ensure sufficient funds for a solid waste management plant and asked officials concerned to construct a boundary in the declared dumping area within three months.
