No headway in snatching case

Berhampur: Even as a case involving snatching of Rs 50,000 from a senior citizen from inside a bank at Berhampur town is about to complete two months, the police are still groping in the dark.

The police have video footage of the incident that was recorded on a CCTV. The thieves have not yet been arrested – a challenge for the local police. Residents have resented that incidents of snatching, thefts and burglaries have become regular phenomena in the town.

Worthy to note, a senior citizen named G Radhakrishna Patra of Ankuli industrial estate had withdrawn Rs 50,000 from his bank account at State Bank of India’s main branch August 14.

While he was walking down to his vehicle, an unidentified youth who was following Radhakrishna from inside the bank, snatched the money bag from him. On being informed, town police reached the spot and started an investigation, reports said.

After primary investigations, the police suspected involvement of a juvenile in the incident and a case (155/19) was filed in the town police station in this connection. The investigations are on and town police are known to be still hopeful of arresting the culprit.

Notably, State government had introduced community policing for senior citizens for their protection, safety and security saying, ‘they are our special concern who need care, support and security’.
