No truck with ruling regional parties in 2019 polls: Yechury

Bhubaneswar: The CPI-M will not have any alliance or cooperation with the ruling regional parties in any state in 2019 general election, party’s general secretary Sitaram Yechury said here Monday.

Yechury said the party cannot have an alliance with the ruling regional parties whose policies and decisions were opposed by the party.

The CPI-M leader also clarified that there would be no alliance with the Congress in the coming elections.

He said the party would contest in minimum seats in states where it has the presence and where there will be a keen contest mainly between BJP and the Congress.

In other seats, the party will cooperate and support the secular, democratic and regional parties to defeat the BJP in the coming elections.

Yechury said the party would give three slogans – defeat the BJP and its alliance parties; strengthen the number of seats of left parties both in Parliament and Assemblies; and form a secular government at the Centre.

With this objective the CPI-M will have an alliance with SP and BSP in Uttar Pradesh, RJD and other secular parties in Bihar, NCP in Maharashtra and DMK in Tamil Nadu even though it is siding with the Congress.

The objective, he said, is to maximise the polling of anti-BJP votes and defeat the BJP.

He said though the BJD is not a part of the NDA government at the Centre, it has always supported the BJP-led NDA government on many major issues like GST, demonetisation, President and Vice-President elections.

Ruling out any alliance with BJD in Odisha, Yechury said, “Supporting the BJD means strengthening BJP. We still want BJD to be in anti-BJP camp in the interest of people of Odisha and the country.”

The party, he said, will contest only from Bhubaneswar Parliamentary constituency and will field candidates in the Assembly seats where it had won in the last Assembly elections and also in the constituencies where it has good presence.

He said the economy has been weakened, agriculture growth rate has dipped and unemployment has risen ever since the BJP came to power.

The agriculture growth rate which was 5.2 per cent when Prime Minister Modi came to power has come down to 2.5 per cent during the last four years.

Similarly, the agriculture production was reduced from 11 plus point to minus four point during the last four years of BJP rule.

The government, Yechury alleged, was trying to hide the unemployment figure and preventing the Parliamentary committee to present a report in this regard in Parliament.

The continuance of the BJP government is not in the interest of the country as communal polarisation was rising and the government was trying to control all institutions like media, CAG, judiciary and Parliament.
