People with blood groups ‘A’, ‘B’ or ‘AB’ have an increased risk of heart diseases than ‘O’ according to lead researcher Tessa Kole, a Master’s degree student at the University Medical Centre Groningen in the Netherlands.
In her presentation, Kole has said that people with non-O blood groups have a greater chance of facing heart attacks. The overall cardiovascular mortality also decreases for people who are not in the ‘O’ segment. Kole has also pointed out people in the other three categories are more prone to contracting gastric cancer in comparison to people having ‘O’ blood group.
The study included 1,362, 569 subjects from 11 prospective cohorts, described in nine articles. There were a total of 23,154 cardiovascular events. The researchers analysed the association between blood group and all coronary events, combined cardiovascular events, and fatal coronary events.
“We demonstrate that having a non-O blood group is associated with a nine per cent increased risk of coronary events and a same percentage % increased risk of cardiovascular events, especially myocardial infarction,” Kole said.
People with a non-O blood group type – ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘AB’ – need to take the same precautionary measures.
However, researchers hoped that further studies will examine each blood type alone, as well as determine why the link between blood type and heart attack risks might exist.
