Bhubaneswar: Members of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) resumed their agitation Sunday over the detention of 10 girls of Rama Devi Women’s University during its foundation day function December 3, with around 30 of them protesting Sunday in front of Kali Mandir at Baramunda here.
The protesters have been demanding the resignation of officer on special duty of RD Women’s University Padmaja Mishra in the presence of whom the girls were detained inside the university.
“We will not stop until justice is done over the illegal detention of the girls. The police and the university authorities have violated human rights, as well as laws governing detention. We demand justice, which we have not got as yet,” said NSUI spokesperson Sanjay Barik.
The row was sparked by the commissionerate police in-charge of the chief minister’s security detaining 10 girls of RD University fearing that they may indulge in violence during the visit of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik who was the chief guest at the foundation day function of the university. The detention was made to prevent a possible demonstration by the girls against the Chief Minister, according to police sources.
The controversy even led to the stalling of the House proceedings December 4.
NSUI has earlier approached Governor SC Jamir seeking his intervention and requesting him to apprise the President of India of their grievance.
