Nuapada: Jailer Balaram Bishi Majhi of Nuapada Sub-Jail was suspended Saturday after a prisoner escaped from the correctional facility, officials said.
Majhi was suspended for alleged negligence in ensuring security at the sub-jail.
The departmental action followed an incident September 7, when prisoner Biswabhihari Majhi, 30, allegedly escaped while cleaning work was underway on the jail premises at about 8 am.
Biswabhihari, a resident of Kandulakona village under Kendimunda panchayat in Sinapali police station limits, was serving a 20-year rigorous imprisonment sentence in a rape case registered in 2021.
A Nuapada court convicted and sentenced him in 2023.
Police launched a search operation immediately after the prisoner’s escape and later formed a special team to trace him.
However, six days after the incident, he remains untraced.
