Angul, Sept 22: In yet another shocking incident of medical negligence, a nurse Tuesday cut upon the upper abdomen of a newborn girl instead of severing her umbilical cord, leading to the intestine hanging out of the body.
The gruesome incident took place at the Mandapal sub-divisional hospital of Talcher in Angul district.
The baby is battling for life at Shishu Bhawan in Cuttack.
Lili Gop, a resident of Munda Hutting-12 of Tentulei village under Bikrampur police limits, was admitted to the Mandapal hospital with labour pain and delivered a girl at 8 am Tuesday, according to reports. The nurses on duty took the newborn to cut the umbilical cord. However, they cut her abdomen instead.
When the baby started screaming in pain, the panicked nurse wrapped her in a piece of cloth and handed her over to her mother saying the condition of the newborn is critical and she should be taken to a better hospital.
Suspecting misconduct, the family took the baby to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) in Angul where they were informed that the child’s abdomen has been cut.
After a while, the baby stopped crying and stopped moving her hands and feet. The shocked family went home, where zilla parishad member Ritarani Das learnt of the incident. Das brought the baby back to the DHH, where she was given primary treatment.
However, the newborn was shifted to Cuttack as she did not respond to treatment at the DHH.
Das expressed grave concern over the incident and demanded that criminal proceedings be initiated against the nurses involved.
Meanwhile, Sishu Bhawan surgery department professor PK Jena said, “This is a normal case in which the baby undergoes a surgery called gastro schiss. In this case the baby would be operated upon.”
