Odia guy develops app to ease consumer pain

NAYAGARH: Smart phone apps making human lives more convenient is commonplace these days. Meet Gyana Ranjan Panda, a worker in CESU, Odisha, who has developed a prototype app promising to make the lives of consumers easier.

Panda named his app ‘Google Electrical Map’. In this map, he includes the area’s electricity sub-stations, 42 distribution transformers, 550 electricity poles and 1400 consumer locations with the help of Google Maps.

Using Google’s map-making tool, Panda colour coded the aforementioned sites. Interacting with Orissa POST, he said, “I was always bogged down by consumer complaints. Hence, to ease off the problems, I developed the app personally.”

Primarily, the app helps to prevent accidents. It allows field staff to swiftly locate faults and reach them quickly, so that consumers don’t suffer for long when things go wrong.

The app has many uses stated Gyana Ranjan. “For instance, assessing loads, minimising power interruption and line losses and preventing accidents during breakdown services are some of its features,” he added.

He plans to upgrade the app to help field staff in other areas. Benefits of the app need to be harnessed as consumers can get electrical help right at their doorstep with a click.

Junior Manager Engg. Balabhadra Samantaray said, “With the help of this Google electrical map, we are reaching the breakdown area in the shortest possible time. In our electricity departments, all line, substation and consumer data is easily stored courtesy of the app.”

It is a very convenient process and the detection of fault locations is quite precise. It is less time consuming to locate the fault point. Moreover, it can be a great asset for Discom including Cesu, Neseo, Southco and Westco.

“It’s also very easy for our staff to reach the address of our consumers. In the future, the department of electricity will look into the benefits of the app to provide good service to our consumers. Panda has done a great job and we are officially making efforts to send this app’s info to the CM’s office. Panda should be felicitated for his breakthrough app,” he added.
