Brahmapur: Odisha Fire Service personnel Saturday fished out the body of a student who was missing during the immersion of the Ganesh idol in the Rushikulya River in Ganjam district.
The deceased was identified as Sumit Kumar Mishra (17), a Plus III (last year) Science student of Tara Tarini College, Purushottampur and a resident of Jharakuali village, police said.
Mishra, along with some others, went to the Rushikulya River ghat near Pratapur for immersion of Ganesh idol Friday evening.
During the immersion, at least three students, including Mishra, were swept away in the river. While local people rescued the two others, Mishra went missing, said a police officer.
Mishra’s body was found floating near Alarigada, about three km away from the spot of the mishap, by villagers. The fire service personnel rushed to the spot and retrieved the body from the river. The body was sent to the community health centre (CHC) Purushottampur.
Kulamani Sethi, inspector in-charge (IIC), Purushottampur police station, said they have registered an unnatural death case and launched an investigation. The body was handed over to the family members of the deceased after conducting an autopsy, he said.
Mishra was the fourth minor to drown in a water body in the last four days during the immersion of the Ganesh idol in Ganjam district.
