Bhubaneswar: Women in the Capital recently took part in the ‘Why Loiter?’ campaign, walking in solidarity with survivors of sexual assault across India and asserting their right to access public spaces freely and safely.
The ‘Walk for Women’ was held at night, with participants following the ‘Gulabi’ (pink) dress code. The event was open to all who identify as women. The campaign sought to reclaim public spaces and challenge social restrictions on women, particularly around their presence in public places at night.
Organisers said what began as a response to anger, despair and distress over sexual violence has grown into a collective effort to reclaim public spaces, take back the night and strengthen solidarity and sisterhood among women.
The campaign also carried the message, “Patriarchy Go Back, Pitrasatta Bharat Chhodo,” calling for greater freedom and safer public spaces for women.
