Odisha eves face Chandigarh test

Players ponder over their next moves in the KVS National Sports Meet in Bhubaneswar, Saturday    

Cuttack: Odisha will face Chandigarh in the quarterfinals of the Sub-Junior Girl’s national football championship at the Barabati Stadium here, Football Association of Odisha (FAO) announced in a press release, Saturday.

The Odisha eves have been in rousing form in the tournament and have so far scored 23 goals in their two matches in the round-robin phase.

Odisha hammered Uttarakhand 17-0 in their campaign opener before thrashing the same opponent 6-0 two days later. Jyoti Kumari is leading the goalscoring charts for Odisha with eight goals, while Manisha Naik has netted five times and Barsha Mahakud four.

In the other quarterfinal matches, Himachal Pradesh will face Uttar Pradesh, Kerala will meet Maharashtra and Jharkhand will cross swords with Manipur. All the four matches will be played Sunday.

 Two from state share lead

Bijayalaxmi Barik and Anushka Mohanty of Bhubaneswar are sharing the top spot along with KM Sharija of Chennai with six points each after the completion of the seventh round of the U-14 girls’ chess event in the 49th KVS National Sports Meet at the KIIT premises here Saturday.

Chess tourney

Bhubaneswar Chess Association (BCA) will host Bhubaneswar Schools’ Chess Championship at the Secretariat Recreation Club in Bhubaneswar, July 14-15, the organisers announced in a press release, Saturday. Prizes will be given to the players occupying the top fifteen positions.

5 in East Zone team

Kalpana Nayak, Poonam Nayak, Indrani Chhatria, Kajal Jena and Subhra Nirjharini Swain of Odisha were selected Saturday to the 15-member East Zone U-19 girl’s team for the Inter-Zonal one-day tournament at Chennai, July 16-25. Indrani has been named the vice-captain of the side.

2 from Odisha

Raghunath Malla and Rajesh Mohanty of Odisha were selected Saturday for the second batch of the U-19 players’ camp at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, July 30-August 24.

Coaching camp

All India Football Federation (AIFF) will conduct an AFC ‘C License coaching course at the Barabati Stadium here Sunday. Twenty two candidates across the country including three from the state will participate in the course, which will be conducted by Bijish Ben Antony.
