Bhubaneswar: A low-pressure system brewing in the Bay of Bengal may cause heavy rainfall and thunderstorms till Saturday in Odisha, the eastern coastal state already bruised by two bouts of floods this monsoon.
The state experienced light to moderate rain at a few places in 24 hours till 8.30 am Tuesday, with parts of Mayurbhanj and Nawarangpur districts recording heavy rainfall.
Chandua Kuliana in Mayurbhanj district recorded 15 cm of rain during the period, while Tentulikhunti in Nawarangpur saw 8 cm of rain.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said, “A low-pressure area is likely to form over west-central-northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts around September 11.”
A detailed forecast on its possible impact on Odisha will be issued as the system develops, an official said.
The IMD said several parts of the state are likely to witness thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds till 8.30 am on Wednesday. It also forecast heavy rainfall till September 12.
It issued an orange warning for heavy rainfall in Baleshwar, Sundaragada, Sambalpur, Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj districts September 9. These areas are likely to witness thunderstorms with winds gusting up to 50 kmph, the weather department said.
A yellow warning for heavy rain has been issued for Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Debagada, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarda districts.
