Odisha girl Arushi bags four medals in Colombo

Bhubaneswar: Arushi Srichandan of Odisha bagged four medals, including a gold, a silver and two bronze in the XIVth Asian Schools Chess Championships which concluded Saturday at Colombo, Sri Lanka. The meet started July 7.

Arushi, a student of a reputed English medium school in Chandrasekharpur locality, secured an individual bronze in the rapid chess event scoring 5.5 points from a possible seven. India finished second in the classic chess format which helped Arushi, who was a part of the team, to get a silver medal. She finished with six points out of nine and was placed sixth individually.

In the blitz segment, played Saturday, Arushi won an individual bronze and a team gold, finishing the event with six points from seven rounds.

Notably, 454 players from 16 Asian countries participated in the tournament.

5 from the state

Five Odisha players were selected Saturday by the AIFF for the preparatory camp of the National U-15 Girls’ football team who will participate in the SAFF Championships. The girls chosen were Salge Majhi, Sangeeta Das, Sarita Soreng, Malati Munda and Jyoti Kumari. The camp will be conducted at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, July 15-August 6.

 Chess tourney

OMM Aditya Khadanga, Jagadish Kumar Ghadai and Prabhanshu Dash emerged as joint winners after the final round of the Bhubaneswar Schools’ Open Chess Championship which concluded here, Sunday. All of them finished with seven points each. Saswat Sahoo and N Pratyush, both with six points were tied second while Rohit Mallick, Dibyasingh Ray and Aadarsh Mishra were joint third with 5.5 points each.
