Odisha govt engineer arrested in disproportionate assets case

Bhubaneswar/Baripada: An Odisha government engineer was arrested Tuesday after the state Vigilance Department unearthed assets disproportionate to his known sources of income, an official statement said.

Several properties, including two multi-storey buildings, a five-acre farmhouse, 23 high-value plots and Rs 10.57 lakh in cash, were seized from his possession Monday.

“Arabinda Mohanty, assistant executive engineer in the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Division at Betanoti in Mayurbhanj’s Baripada, has been placed under arrest and will be forwarded to the court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Baripada for possession of disproportionate assets,” according to the Vigilance statement.

Acting on an allegation about possession of assets disproportionate to his known sources of income, Vigilance sleuths launched searches at properties linked to Mohanty on Monday, it said.

The raids, based on search warrants issued by Special Judge, Vigilance, Baripada, were carried out at 10 locations across Mayurbhanj, Baleshwar and Khordha districts, officials said.

During the searches, the sleuths have so far detected 23 high-value plots in and around Baleshwar town, a five-acre farmhouse in Bhadrak, two buildings, Rs 10.57 lakh in cash, deposits worth Rs 69.69 lakh, 300 gm of gold, a four-wheeler and other assets, they said.

A case has been registered against the engineer under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2018 while further investigation is underway, the officials added.
