Odisha govt orders ‘judicial probe’ into Biramitrapur, Puri custodial deaths

Bhubaneswar: The state government has ordered for a ‘judicial probe’ into the alleged custodial deaths and two separate judicial officers will probe the allegations, which were reported from Baseli Sahi police station in Puri and Biramitrapur police station in Sundargarh.

This was informed by Minister of State for Home Dibya Shankar Mishra Tuesday afternoon to the Odisha Legislative Assembly during the ongoing winter session, replying to a discussion on the admissibility of an adjournment motion on the state’s prevailing law and order situation.

The sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate of Panposh and the first class Judicial Magistrate of Puri town have been entrusted with the task of probing the alleged custodial deaths, the Minister Mishra added.

Notably, police have been probing the allegations in strict adherence to guidelines of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

Victim K Ramesh was hacked to death November 18 by the Baseli Sahi police, a few hours after he was picked up in connection with a case. Likewise, another victim Tarique Salim died at the Biramitrapur police station November 19, under mysterious circumstances.
