Dhenkanal: A woman, who got married last month, was allegedly beaten to death over dowry by her in-laws at Jhumpudia village in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district, a source said Tuesday.
According to the source, the victim was taken to a local hospital in an unconscious state. The doctor there declared her brought dead.
Following the death of the victim, her father and other family members filed an FIR at Bhapur Police Station against her in-laws. They alleged that the victim was killed over dowry. Based on the FIR, police arrested the deceased’s husband Debi Prasad Mohanty along with his father and produced them in court.
The victim was identified as Lakhmipriya Patnaik. She was a resident of Puruna Patanda village under Athagarh police limits in Cuttack district.
Lakhmipriya and Debi Prasad tied the knot March 11, 2023.
As per the FIR filed by Lakhmipriya’s father, Debi Prasad and his family members demanded a dowry of Rs 3 lakh. The father of the deceased had already paid Rs 1 lakh to the in-laws of his daughter. He had agreed to pay the remaining Rs 2 lakh after selling their land.
However, Debi Prasad and his family used to torture Lakhmipriya over the delay in dowry payment and beat her to death, the FIR stated.
Police have launched a probe into the matter.
