Bhubaneswar: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an Action Taken Report from the Mayurbhanj District Magistrate on alleged illegal stone quarrying in the foothills of Similipal National Park, including areas near Saratchandrapur and Bankasahi villages.
In an order dated September 28, the NHRC directed the DM to inquire into the allegations and submit a report within two weeks of receiving the Commission’s communication. The complaint, filed by rights activist and advocate Akhand, alleged that unauthorised quarrying was being carried out, particularly at night, using drilling machines and explosives.
Blasting has allegedly caused loud explosions and tremors in nearby villages, with cracks developing in some houses, especially mud houses inhabited by poor and vulnerable families. The complainant also alleged quarrying without requisite approvals or environmental clearances and claimed that more than 50 stone-laden trucks passed through the area daily, affecting road safety and residents’ normal lives.
The complainant further alleged deforestation, hill cutting, and noise and air pollution, warning of risks to the safety, livelihood and dignity of communities dependent on natural resources.
The NHRC said that, if true, the allegations would constitute serious human rights violations and directed its Registry to forward the complaint to the DM for an expeditious report. The complainant sought action against those involved, including seizure of machinery and trucks, besides relief and compensation for affected families.
