Odisha sets target to produce 1k-cr eggs annually

Bhubaneswar: The state government has launched the Commercial Layer Farming Scheme (CLFY) to boost egg production, promote poultry entrepreneurship and meet the growing demand for eggs in the state.

The scheme was launched by Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallik during the celebration of World Egg Day 2026 at the local Veterinary Training Institute in Bhubaneswar Friday.

The state government has set an ambitious target of producing 1,000 crore eggs annually by 2036 under Odisha Vision 2036. Under the Commercial Layer Farming Scheme, fi nancial incentives will be provided for establishing modern, automated commercial layer and pullet farms with a capacity of more than 25,000 birds.

Eligible entrepreneurs will receive financial assistance of up to Rs 10 crore. Advance subsidies through a ‘Mirror Account’ mechanism will also be provided to reduce the interest burden on entrepreneurs availing bank loans.

Highlighting the current status of egg production in the state, Mallik said, “Odisha is currently producing approximately 1.12 crore eggs per day.

The production comes from 189 commercial layer farms, semi-commercial layer farms and backyard poultry units. Under the Samrudhi scheme for animal resources, 43,000 beneficiaries will receive 100 per cent financial assistance for backyard poultry farming during the 2026–27 financial year.

Financial assistance of up to Rs 2.64 lakh is also being provided for duck farming. For semi-commercial layer farms with capacities ranging from 1,000 to 4,000 birds, the government offers subsidies covering 50 to 60 per cent of the project cost, subject to a maximum of Rs 19.74 lakh. Entrepreneurs establishing large-scale layer farms can also receive financial assistance of up to Rs 1 crore under the Chief Minister’s Krushi Udyog Yojana.

The newly launched Commercial Layer Farming Scheme will extend support to larger, automated units with capacities exceeding 25,000 birds, with assistance of up to Rs 10 crore. According to the minister, annual per capita egg availability in Odisha currently stands at 87 eggs, compared with the national average of 106 eggs.

The state aims to bridge this gap and bring per capita egg availability in line with the national average by 2029. Odisha also intends to secure a place among India’s top five egg-producing states in the coming years. Mallik said the implementation of various poultry development schemes was expected to accelerate production, improve supply and encourage greater private investment in the sector.

The minister further stated that approximately Rs 512 crore in financial assistance had been provided to poultry farmers and entrepreneurs in Odisha over the past two-and-a-half years.

Commissioner-cum-Secre tary of the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department, Prem Chandra Chaudhary, said, Odisha needed to make further progress in egg production and emphasised the importance of strengthening the state’s poultry sector.
