Bhubaneswar: Odisha has been selected to pilot an artificial intelligence (AI)- based child growth monitoring system that can assess a child’s weight, height and other key anthropometric parameters using a mobile phone video, officials said Thursday.
The technology was demonstrated by representatives of the Wadhwani Foundation during the state-level observance of World Breastfeeding Week 2026 here. The AI-powered solution measures a child’s weight, height, head circumference, chest circumference and Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) through video-based analysis. On the occasion, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to promoting breastfeeding as the cornerstone of child health. “Mother’s milk is the first shield of protection for a child’s healthy life. Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months lays the foundation for a healthy child and a stronger future,” she said, urging families and communities to actively support mothers in ensuring optimal infant nutrition. Organised by the department of Women and Child Development (WCD), the event witnessed participation from young children and their parents. The programme was chaired by department’s Commissioner-cum-Secretary Mrinalini Darswal, while Director Monisha Banerjee delivered the welcome address. Addressing the gathering, Darswal described breast milk as a child’s ‘first vaccine’ and the most nutritious source of food.
She emphasised that breastfeeding should begin within one hour of birth, be continued exclusively for the first six months, and thereafter be complemented with appropriate food while continuing breastfeeding up to two years to ensure a child’s physical, mental and cognitive development. She also highlighted the crucial role of fathers and family members in supporting mothers and creating a nurturing environment for children’s healthy growth.
To promote healthy early childhood practices, parents of children in the 0 to 6 years age group attending the event were presented with nutrition baskets containing fruits and child-care kits. Department officials and consultants also participated in the programme, reiterating their commitment to promoting breastfeeding, improving maternal and child nutrition, and ensuring a healthier future for every child.
